When you are searching into getting a professional website designer to build a website for you, if you have not gone via the process ahead of then you are doubtless pretty much open to whatever the designer says and does and trusting them from the beginning. There are loads of questions that you possibly want answering, but whereas all of these the designer no doubt answers, it could be the questions that you have not thought of that have the sting in the tail.

Unfortunately for customers, maybe fortunately for me, lots of of my customers arrive having had a bad familiarity of a previous designer and wanting to move. good for me in that I’m choosing up more customers, sad though that they have fallen for various, possibly unintentional, traps along the way. The problem is, unless you have suffered these yourself then you almost naturally don’t know to check that you won’t become the next victim.

Now a lot of these problems are perhaps not intended to cause problems. possibly in a few instances they are more intended to keep you as their customer. But this arm twisted behind the back method of customer retention is not what I intend for in my website design Southport business. I much prefer to keep customers happy and coming back!

The biggest problem that I see regularly is in registering domain names. On a side note, I much prefer to register domains than obtain the customer to do it, because it wastes more time transferring the hosting across than the URL overheads to register. But a lot of designers don’t follow the rules when they register a domain name for their customers.

It doesn’t apply to the generic domain names, but with Nominet when you register a new domain name, it is in the rules that the contact name ought to be the name of the owner – the name of the person ultimately paying for it. And for great reason and why our webdesign Southport customers always have their contact details on their new websites I register for them.

What I see repeatedly happening is the designer registers the new domain name in their, or their design company’s, own name. A 12 months or two down the line and there’s a few sort of fall out regards being too slow to make amendments to the site and the customer decides to move. Of course, having spent time, effort and money promoting the website they want to keep the same name. But the designer starts to locate awkward. They necessitate to keep the site. They point out that the domain name was registered for ‘free’ because part of the build and it’s their name.

There are several reasons for this to happen. at times it possibly will be simply a mistake. But the thing to do is when you are ready to hand over the balance of payments is to check the Whois records for your website. If anyone other than you or your preferred contact is listed because the owner, unearth the designer to change it earlier than you pay up. It may possibly simply save you a lot of trouble further down the line.
