Me And My Audiobooks

I am sure I am not the only person who finds it hard to have some ‘me time’. I have been promising myself for some time to join a gym or enroll in a class of some kind. For years I have toyed with the idea of going to night school to do a course of some kind. Now six years on and still no further. I have envied from a far people who have the time to sit and read a book. They seem to have an abundance of knowledge which can often make people like me feel a little inadequate. Apart from being on holiday I can’t remember the last time I read a book.

I read to my kids every night and I enjoy seeing their faces as the stories unfold but have yet to find this for myself.

Part of this is really my own doing as by the time I sit down and relax for an hour I don’t want to concentrate on anything so find myself in front of my tv.

I recently purchased an mp3 and have downloaded many of my favourite tracks. This is being played constantly and has become an extension of my ear. I have tried reading and listening at the same time but although I can ‘multi task’ I wasn’t getting anything from either, so decided to make an effort and use this time reading. I love music and didn’t want to do with out it totally so decided that I would listen to the music while I was in the car – there I would have the best of best of both worlds.

I looked into this further over the next few days and came across a few websites which had audio books to download. Where would I start was the next hurdle so many books to choose from – the selection was amazing. In the past I have felt slightly intimidated walking into book shops with the endless amount of books I knew I hadn’t read. Silly I know but for someone who maybe reads one book a year may well be understandable.

The first few books I downloaded were Biography’s which I enjoyed enormously. I decided to start with these as I had enjoyed them in the past.

Once I got into the habit of taking my mp3 around with me I was on a roll and found that I was downloading books far more frequently than I imagined I would. I was actually enjoying my new past time and felt I was able to converse more freely with people when joining in any conversations about the books they had read.

Something I have also noticed recently is that people who were avid readers in the past had expressed the need to pick up a book and start reading again. I felt quite superior that I had managed to sign up into the world of literature which I had never been part of before. I am surrounded by readers and have always envied their freedom to explore new worlds simply by opening a new book or chapter.

People often say that it is the little things that make a difference and that is right in many cases. Reading or listening to audiobooks can open your imagination and expand your knowledge or horizons. The more you read the more you can get hooked and how nice that is.

It is an experience you can share with anyone and what’s more they will share their experience of a favourite book. So in some cases this can be ‘two books for the price of one’!
